Ajay Thakur sizzled on the mat for his franchise, Tamil Thalaivas, and the India national kabaddi team this year. He was as prolific a raider as he had been in 2017, but his individual brilliance didn't convert into successes for the Thalaivas or the national team.

As the captain of his ProKabaddi League (PKL) franchise, Tamil Thalaivas, and the national team, Thakur starred for both.

With Thalaivas, Thakur finished the campaign with a total points haul of 204, only 18 shy of his 2017 season tally. He completed 177 successful raids — he had the fourth-most raid points (203) — which, at the end of Thalaivas' campaign, was third only to Patna Pirates' Pardeep Narwal (1st) and Bengaluru Bulls' Pawan Kumar (2nd).

Thakur-led Thalaivas, though, finished bottom of Zone B, like it had in 2017. And the national team, which had won the gold medal in all previous editions of the Asian Games and Kabaddi World Cup, came up short at the 18th edition of the Asiad, where it was eliminated at the semifinal stage by the eventual winner, Iran.
