Hello and welcome to Sportstar 's live blog of Day 1 of the 18th Asian Games.

9.00 pm: So, that is it for today. We have had an exciting opening day with some highs and lows for India but it is safe to say it is Bajrang Punia's day. He wins India's first gold medal in this Asian Games.

8.55 pm: Two medals for India on day one. Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar won the bronze in 10m air rifle Mixed final but it was Bajrang Punia who hogged the limelight winning the gold medal in 65kg wrestling.

8:45pm: Wrestling: Pawan Kumar loses his Freestyle 86 kg bronze medal match to Mongolian wrestler Orgodol Uitumen 1-8.

8:43pm: Wrestling : The Mongolian wrestler pins down Pawan to take a 8-1 lead. Making a comeback looks tough for the Indian grappler.

8:40pm: Wrestling: Pawan Kumar struggling in his bronze medal bout in 86kg, trails the Mongolian wrestler Orgodol Uitumen 0-5 with the Period 2 in progress.

8:09pm: HOCKEY: FULL-TIME: India 8-0 Indonesia! Rani Rampal’s team completely played Indonesia out of the game by laying a siege on the opponent’s area, but will take a hard look at its conversion rate. Indian goalkeeper had just one touch on the ball which explains how dominant India was during the match.

8:06pm: HOCKEY: India wins three corners in a row but poor penalty conversion keeps the scoreline at 8-0.

8:01pm: HOCKEY: India appeal for another corner and win it. But Indonesian runners make sure they sharply intercept Gurjit's attempt.

7:59pm: HOCKEY: INDIA 8-0! Gurjit Kaur scores as she finally executes a top-class drag flick off an Indian corner.

7:52pm: HOCKEY: NAVNEET MAKES IT 7-0! The forward makes it easy work of the Indonesian defence to score it past the goalkeeper.

7:49pm: HOCKEY: Brilliant save by the Indonesia goalkeeper. Gurjit goes for the far right corner but the goalkeeper is able to get the faintest of blocks to keep it out.

7:46pm: HOCKEY: Indonesia makes a last-ditch clearance to deny India the seventh goal. The host has played a better game in the second half so far closing down India quickly inside the D area.

7:44pm: HOCKEY: FINAL QUARTER STARTS!

7:42pm: HOCKEY: END OF THIRD QUARTER! INDIA 6-0 INDONESIA. Indonesia tried to bring the ball out of the defence on three ocassions, but is unable to string three passes together.

7:40PM: HOCKEY: India wins a penalty corner, but sloppy finishing from the corner has denied India to extend its unassailable lead.

7:36pm: HOCKEY: Indonesia is being denied even the slightest of ball possession by the Indian players. Lalremsiami seems to have won another penalty corner for India but the decision is overturned after a referral.

7.33 pm: WRESTLING:BAJRANG PUNIA WINS GOLD FOR INDIA. Punia beats Japan's Takatani Daichi 11-8 and gets India its first gold of Asian Games 2018. He was always on the ascendancy and never let his opponent crawl back into the game.

7:30pm: HOCKEY: India wins two back-to-back penalty corners as the referee consults the video referee to check Gurjit's shot on the previous drag flick which seems to have hit the Indonesian runner on the thigh. Free hit to Indonesia.

7:28PM: HOCKEY: Another penalty corner for India. But the Indonesian goalkeeper saves Gurjit's shot and then Rani's rebound to keep the scoreline at 6-0.

7.26pm: WRESTLING: India's Bajrang Punia is all set to get India's first gold, if he continues playing the way he is doing now. He leads 6-2 against Japan's Takatani Daichi now.

7:24pm: HOCKEY: Gurjit misses out on scoring from another penalty corner.

7:23pm: HOCKEY: Gurjit wastes the corner as her shot takes a deflection off the runner's stick and Indonesia breathes a sigh of relief.

7:22pm: HOCKEY: Penalty corner for India!

7:20pm: HOCKEY: SECOND HALF STARTS! So far the Indian forwards have toyed with the Indonesian defence which looked lost after the first goal. Only on couple of occasions was the host able to get the ball near the Indian penalty area.

7:10pm: HOCKEY: HALF-TIME! INDIA 6-0 INDONESIA. The second quarter ends with India adding four more goals to its first-period tally and will be eyeing for a huge win against Indonesia which is playing its first major tournament .

7:06pm: HOCKEY: Vandana scores the sixth! An Indian penalty-corner leads to a pinball inside the Indonesian D area, but Vandana gets hold of a loose ball and finishes calmly from point-blank range.

7:01pm: HOCKEY: Lalremsiami makes it 5-0! The 18-year old forward deflects Vandana's reverse stick into the goal.

6:59pm: HOCKEY: GOAL Gurjit Kaur! India goes 4-0 up as Gurjit's shot takes a deflection off the goalkeeper's pads and into the net.

6:58pm: HOCKEY: Udita and Navjot combine to win another Penalty Corner for India!

6:56pm: HOCKEY: Fifth Penalty Corner for India! But Gurjit is unable to get past the Indonesian runners.

6:53pm: HOCKEY: The Indonesians hold their line despite wave of attacks from their superior opponents. Rani Rampal tries to win a corner on the right side but the referee awards a free hit to Indonesia.

6:50pm: 16' PENALTY CORNER FOR INDIA! Gurjit Kaur scores! The drag flicker makes it count on her fourth attempt and sends a powerful shot behind the Indonesian goalkeeper. India 3-0.

6:49pm: Second Quarter begins!

6:47pm: End of First Quarter: India 2-0 Indonesia. Goals from Udita and Vandana Katariya have put India ahead in the first quarter where India attacked with precision leaving Indonesia vulnerable at the back.

6:44pm: HOCKEY: VANDANA MAKES IT 2-0! Navjot Kaur passes to Vandana Katariya from the edge of the D-area who is lurking at the near post. The forward makes no mistake and puts it behind the goalkeeper.

6:38: HOCKEY: 9' GOAL INDIA! Udita latches onto a rebound off the goalkeeper's pads to flick into the right top corner. India 1-0 Indonesia.

6:37: HOCKEY: 8' India wins back-to-back penalty corners but the Indonesian keeper blocks the drag flick.

6: 35: HOCKEY: 6' PENALTY CORNER for India! But Gurjit Kaur takes a shot straight at the runner.

6:34pm: HOCKEY: 4' Deep Grace Ekka comes up with an intervention on the edge of the Indian D area. Indonesians appeal for a corner but the referee turns down the appeal.

6:32pm: HOCKEY: 2'  India make the first attack on the Indonesian goal but the host pushes clear the danger as India looks to play out from the back.

6.30 pm:HOCKEY: This is how the Indian line-up looks like.

 

6:28: HOCKEY: India vs Indonesia: The national anthems are played out as India gets ready to face Indonesia. Host Indonesia is yet to be certified by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to be in the world rankings while India is the highest-ranked team in the tournament at ninth in the world. India was able to achieve the bronze medal in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

6.22 pm: SWIMMING: It doesn't look good for Sajan Prakash. He was initially on the backfoot but a last-ditch attempt seems to have improved his personal timing. He finishes fifth with a timing of 1:57:75. China's Zhuhao Li wins the gold with a timing of 1:55:76.

6.19pm: SWIMMING: Michael Phelps holds the World Record in the 200m butterfly event with a timing of 1:51:51. Will it be broken today?

6.13 pm: SWIMMING: The men's 200m butterfly event is ready and so are we. All eyes on Sajan Prakash now. Let's hope he continues his good form. Prakash is in lane 3 with a qualifying time of 1:58:12.

6.08 pm: KABADDI: It was just a matter of time before this result came up. India's brilliance to the fore as it demolishes Sri Lanka's challenge 44-28 to win. Overall a good day for India in Kabaddi. The women got the better of Japan (43-12) and the men quashed a Bangladeshi attempt 50-21 before thumping Sri Lanka.

5.58 pm: KABADDI: Rahul Chaudhari steps up for India. He completes a brilliant raid and puts India in the driving seat again. India stretches its lead to 40-24 now. A complete stronghold on the match.

5:57pm: WUSHU: Sanathoi Devi loses her Round-of-16 match in the women's 52kg category to Iran's Elaheh 2-0.

5.53 pm: SWIMMING: Now all eyes will be on Sajan Prakash as he competes in the men's 200m butterfly event, in a while.

5.50 pm: SWIMMING: A disappointing finish for India's Srihari Nataraj. He finishes seventh in the men's 100m backstroke event. He clocked 27.28 seconds at the 50m mark and eventually finished the race with a timing of 56:19. China's Jiayu Xu wins the gold with a finish of 52:34.

5.47 pm:KABADDI: India vs Sri Lanka: Easy pickings for India now. 30-18 in favour of India now.

5.40 pm:KABADDI: India vs Sri Lanka: A superb raid by captain Ajay Thakur sees India gallop to a 24-13 lead at the end of the first half. A huge task for Lanka to eclipse the lead now.

5:08pm: WRESTLING: Pawan Kumar wins his first Repechage bout in the freestyle 86kg category against Indonesia's Fahriyansyah 11-0. He will face Mongolia's Uitumen Orgodol in the bronze medal playoff.

4:50pm: WRESTLING: Mausam Khatri will also not be competing in the Repachage round. The Uzbek opponent who defeated him has failed to make it to the final.

4:36pm: HANDBALL: India loses to China 21-36 in the women's competition. It is the team's third consecutive loss in the pool

4:27pm: WRESTLING: Bajrang Punia beats Mongolia's Batchuluun Batmagnai to reach the final of men's 65kg. The Indian wins by technical superiority.

 

4:26pm: WRESTLING: Sandeep Tomar is out of contention for a medal after his opponent failed to qualify for the finals.

Meanwhile, Sushil Kumar is out of contention for a medal after his opponent failed to qualify for the final.

4:00pm: WRESTLING: Pawan Kumar loses to Iran's Hassan Yazdanicharati in men's 86 kg quarterfinals.

3:41pm: WRESTLING: Mausam Khatri loses to Uzbekistan's Ibragimov Magomed in men's 97kg quarterfinals.

3.30pm:VOLLEYBALL: In women's volleyball, India loses its match to Korea 3-0. It went down in a 23-minute game 17-25, 11-25, 13-25.

3:03pm: WRESTLING: Bajrang Punia through to the semifinals of men's 65kg category after beating Tajikistan's Fayziev Abdulqosim.

2:38pm: WRESTLING: Sandeep Tomar loses to Iran's Reza Atrinagharchi in the second round of men's 57kg category.

2:00pm: BADMINTON: The Indian men's badminton team sets up a quarterfinal clash with Indonesia after beating Maldives 3-0.

1:30pm: WRESTLING: Bajrang Punia beats Uzbekistan Khasanov Sirojiddin 13-3 by technical superiority, thereby making quarterfinals of the men's 65kg wrestling.

1:16pm: KABADDI: The Indian men's kabaddi team posts an emphatic win in its opening Group A match against Bangladesh, winning 50-21.

 

12:55pm:  WRESTLING: Sandeep Tomar wins his first-round match against  Turkmenistan's Nazarov Rustem.

12:40pm: WRESTLING:  Shocker - Sushil Kumar has lost his first-round bout in the 74kg freestyle category. He lost to Bahrain's Adam Batirov   5-3. He has to try for a medal through repechage now.

12:20pm: Indian men's kabaddi team, in Group A, is in action next against Bangladesh. It will play take on Sri Lanka later today.

12:05pm: SWIMMING: Srihari Natraj has qualified for the finals of men's 100m backstroke.

11:48am: SHOOTING: Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar keep India 3rd after 34 shots.

11:45am: SHOOTING: Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar keep India second at the end of stage one of in the final of the 10m Air Rifle Team Shooting event.

11:27am: SHOOTING: Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar are set to go in the final of the 10m Air Rifle Team Shooting event.

11:20am: WUSHU: Sanatombi Chanu Leimapokam finishes 14th with a score of 9.35.

11:01am: WRESTLING: Bajrang Punia is in action next in the men's 65kg wrestling.

10:38am: SHOOTING: Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verma fail to qualify for the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team shooting final.

10:02am: Chinese Taipei women register a convincing 84-61 win over the Indian women, who failed to capitalised on a good first half in the second.

9:44am: Swimmer Sajan Prakash qualifies for the final of the men's 200m butterfly.

9:43am: Om Prakash and Savarn Singh qualify for final in men's sculls by finishing 1st in their heat.

9:40am: Chinese Taipei has pulled away with more composed shooting in the third quarter, currently holds a 13-point lead (58-45).

9:39am: Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj qualifies for the men's 100m backstroke finals.

9:27am: The Indian and Chinese Taipei women's basketball teams are back on for the second half, Chinese Taipei leading India 35-33.

9:23am: Anjul Namdev finishes 5th in Men's Changquan Wushu final with a score 9.66; another Indian, Suraj Singh Mayanglambam, finishes 10th with 9.51.

9:09am: India's Srihari Nataraj (lane 6) and Arvind Mani (lane 2) take the top two spots in the men's 100m backstroke heats. Nataraj finishes with a time of 55.86 and Arvind finishes in 58.09 seconds. (Image below)

9:02am: Chinese Taipei retakes the lead (27-26), but India is defensively strong and the two teams are missing more than scoring with their attempts.

8:55am: Indian women take the lead with a three-pointer, the score is currently India 23-20 Chinese Taipei.

8:49am: End of the first quarter, Indian women trailing Chinese Taipei by only a point, 17-18.

8:47am: The Indian women's basketball team is going toe to toe with Chinese Taipei, trailing only by two points 16-18 in the first quarter.

8:45am: Meanwhile, Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar qualify for 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team finals after coming 2nd in qualifying.

8:34am: The Indian women currently trail Chinese Taipei 3-5 in the first quarter of the group-stage basketball match.

8:23am: The Indian women's basketball team is in action next, against Chinese Taipei.

8:12am: The Indian women's kabaddi team makes a winning start in its quest for gold, beats Japanese 43-12 in the first group match.

8:04am: The Indian women's kabaddi team inflicts a third (!) all-out on the Japanese, is currently 33-10 ahead!

8:01am: Saurabh Sangvekar finishes second (1:54:87), behind Adil Kaskabay.

8:00am: Saurabh Sangvekar in action in the men's 200m freestyle swimming heats. He is currently 3rd!

7:49am: End of the first half in the women's kabaddi match between India and Japan, India leading the Japanese 19-8.

7:43am: The Indian women's kabaddi team inflicts the first all-out in the match against Japan, currently lead 14-7.
