He looked shaky in the opening round but Amit Panghal recovered well to pull off a split verdict against Philippines’ Carlo Paalam and enter the men’s 49kg final here on Friday.

The 22-year-old Army boxer is now the lone Indian in the final after Commonwealth Games champion Vikas Krishnan, who suffered a cut above his eye earlier, was forced to give a walkover to Kazakhstan’s Amankul Abilkhan in his 75kg semifinal. Vikas will now end up with the bronze.

Carlo looked impressive in the opening round but Amit worked his way back, frequently attempting to go in and attack in the next two rounds.

The Algerian, Indonesia and the Uzbek judges scored in Amit’s favour while the Chinese and Japanese judges favoured the Filipino.

Amit will have a tough final against Uzbekistan’s Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov in Saturday’s final. Dustamov enjoyed a 5-0 verdict over China’s Wu Zhonglin in the other semifinal.
