Asian Games gold medallist M.R. Poovamma returned to a rousing welcome at the Mangaluru International Airport, here, Thursday.
Poovamma was received by her parents and relatives, MLA, Vedavyas Kamath, corporate Roopa D. Bangera, and Alva’s Education Foundation chairman Mohan Alva among others.
Poovamma, along with Hima Das, Saritaben Laxmanbhai Gayakwad and Velluva Koroth Vismaya bagged the gold medal in the women’s 4 x 400 metres relay event at the 18th edition of the Asian Games in Jakarta.

Das and Yahiya, then, teamed up along with Rajiv Arokiaand Poovamma to win a silver medal in mixed 4 x 400 metres relay. India improved the country’s previous record at Asian Games, with a medal tally of 15 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze.
Poovamma told reporters the support of her parents was most important. “I dedicate this medal to my parents and victims of the Kodagu floods,” she said.
