Karate, a Japanese martial art form centred around the development of defensive and counter-attacking body movements, will make its Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

Karate comprises kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). While it was introduced at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, India is yet to win a medal. In the seven editions of the Games where karate was included, Japan has dominated with 43 medals.

For Jakarta-Palembang, India is sending a squad of four men and four women.
