Boris Becker will be inaugurating this year’s Tata Steel Kolkata 25K run when the German tennis legend makes a two-day trip to the city on Saturday in a bid to popularise the run.

With the city’s own icon former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly joining the former Wimbledon champion, the promoter of the run, Procam International, is expecting a big swell in the participation after Becker was brought in by one of the event’s partners, Puma. The last edition of the run registered 8,200 participants.

A team of around 30 professional runners, including G. Laxmanan and Swati Gadhave, will participate in the event which offers a total prize money of around Rs. 22 lakhs.

The event has received the support of 37 NGOs, which will support various causes like Education, Disability, women empowerment, and health among others. The event has also attracted 24 corporate firms, who have donated a total of Rs. 37.5 lakhs, announced the promoter of the 25k run on Tuesday.
