National record-holder Om Prakash Karhana won the men’s shot put gold at the Thailand Open athletics championship in Bangkok on Wednesday but was far away from the Rio Olympic entry standard of 20.50m.

Om Prakash, whose national record throw of 20.69m came at Szombathely in Hungary in 2012, had a best throw of 18.58m today. He has a season best of 19m which came in the Indian Grand Prix in Delhi in late April.

Meanwhile, National inter-State champion Dharambir Singh clocked 21.10s for the silver in the men’s 200m but was nowhere near the Olympics qualifying time.

The results:

Shot put: 1. Om Prakash (Ind) 18.58m, 2. Jae-Min Kim (Kor) 17.08.
