Gold shower for India at Junior Championships

After just two bronze medals on the opening day, India enjoyed a gold shower in the 17th Asian junior athletics championship at the Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Saturday.

The day witnessed heavy rain which slowed down many athletes but India won four golds through Kerala women’s quartermiler Jisna Mathew, men’s hammer thrower Ashish Jakhar (Haryana) and men’s and women’s 1500m runners Ajay Kumar Saroj (UP) and Lili Das (WB).

All the four have already qualified for the World junior championship to be held at Bydgozscz, Poland, next month.

Jisna, a senior international who is coached by P.T. Usha, won the 400m gold comfortably while Ajay Kumar, the Federation Cup and Indian Grand Prix champion this season, was more than 10 seconds slower than his personal best while winning the 1500m gold in heavy rain.
