Sports Authority of India was investigating Kunhi Muhammed regarding the Jithin Paul issue but there was no confirmation whether it was the reason for the new development.

Kunhi Mohammed, the coach, who guided the men’s 4x400m relay team to national records, has been sacked.

“Yes, Kunhi Mohammed has been sacked,” said an AFI source on Wednesday. The news was confirmed by a prominent relay runner too.

“But we don’t know whether he has been given an official termination letter,” said a national coach.

The men’s 400m runners have been on a spectacular record-breaking spree and last year the mile relay team broke the national record twice, at Erzurum in Turkey in June and the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru in July as it qualified for the Rio Olympics.

But there was some controversy recently with hurdler and relay runner Jithin Paul in trouble for possession of a banned drug, meldonium, at the national camp at Patiala.

One hears that the Sports Authority of India was investigating Kunhi Muhammed regarding the Jithin Paul issue but there was no confirmation whether it was the reason for the new development.

The quarter-milers are currently in Patiala.
