Muhammed Anas bettered his own 400m national record, bringing it down from 45.31s to 45.24s at the Velka Cena Noveho Mesta Nad Metuji athletics meet in the Czech Republic on Saturday.

The Kerala quartermiler’s previous record came while finishing fourth in the recent Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast.

Kunhu Muhammed (46.68s) finished runner-up while Jeevan Suresh (46.98) and Jithu Baby (47.13) took the next two spots in the race.

Meanwhile, in the women’s 400m, Karnataka’s 2014 Asian Games bronze medallist M.R. Poovamma won the gold in 53.01s while Kerala’s V.K. Vismaya took the bronze in 53.88. The other Indian in the event, Saritaben Gayakwad, was disqualified.

Tamil Nadu’s Arokia Rajiv, also a 400m bronze medallist at the Incheon Asian Games, won the bronze in the men’s 200m in 20.77s.

The Indian 400m and relay teams are currently training near Prague in the Czech Republic for next month’s Asian Games in Jakarta.
