Santosh, Aftab clock personal bests on way to semifinals

Tamil Nadu’s T. Santosh Kumar and U.P.’s Aftab Alam clocked personal bests on their way to the men’s 400m hurdles semifinals in the IAAF World under-20 athletics championships at Bydgoszcz, Poland, on Thursday.

The top three finishers from each of the seven heats and the next three fastest qualified for the semifinals. Santosh, who took part in the Youth Worlds in Colombia last year, was second in his first round heat with 51.46s. Aftab, who finished fifth in 52.34s in another heat, also made the grade.

Meanwhile Kerala’s Abitha Mary Manuel, who had a personal best 2:06.91s in the women’s 800m first round on Tuesday, bowed out in the semifinal on Wednesday night after finishing fifth with 2:09.80s.

Men: 100m: Noah Lyles (USA) 10.17s. Long jump: Masso Maykel (Cub) 8.0m.

Women: 3000m: Beyenu Degefa (Eth) 8:41.76s (NMR). Javelin throw: Klaudia Maruszewska (Pol) 57.59m. Shot put: Alina Kenzel (Ger) 17.58m.
