V. Ashrith bagged a ‘double’ in the boys section (under-13) in the Hyderabad Hunters junior badminton championship at the Gopi Chand Academy here on Wednesday.

V. Ashrith warded off a spirited challenge from S. Srirag in the singles final and later combined well with T. Sai Prasad to bag the doubles title defeating G. Sai Mathur and Pranav Srikar.

In the girls’ singles category, K Shreshtha Reddy partnered A. Shikhaa to clinch their gold getting the better of B. Prashamsha and V. Shreyansh after failing to beat her partner in the singles final.

Rio Olympics gold medallist and Hunters captain in the on-going PBL Carolina Marin, who watched the matches, was impressed with the young talent on display.

“These youngsters are extremely talented and if they keep working hard we might see a world champion emerge out of them some day soon,” she said.

The event is part of the efforts of Hunters to promote the sport and also scout talent.

“All the athletes participating here were registered under the Badminton Association of India (BAI) and the tournament was conducted under professional supervision so that the budding athletes have a level playing field and get a chance to meet their Hunters idols and the whole team,” CEO of Hyderabad Hunters, Dr. V.R.K. Rao explained.

"An overall prize money of Rs. 50,000 was distributed among the winners, runners up and the semi-finalists," he said.
