Australian Open: Saina, Sindhu, Srikanth, Praneeth in quarters

Kidambi Srikanth and Sai Praneeth won three-game matches to set up a quarterfinal clash at the Australian Super Series.

Kidambi Srikanth and B. Sai Praneeth won thrilling matches in the second round to set up an all-Indian quarterfinal clash at the USD 750,000 Australian Super Series here on Thursday.

P. V. Sindhu also advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight-games win over China’s Chen Xiaoxin.

Srikanth got the better of world No. 1 Son Wan Ho, once again, after he'd beaten him in the Indonesia Open semifinal last week. Srikanth won the 57-minute clash 15-21, 21-13, 21-13.

Sai beat China’s Huang Yuxiang 21-15, 18-21, 21-13 in a match that lasted four minutes past an hour.

Srikanth and Sai had clashed Singapore Open final in April with the latter emerging victorious.

In women’s singles, fifth seed Sindhu defeated Chen 21-13, 21-18 in 46 minutes. She will either take on Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon or world No. 1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei.

Saina Nehwal brushed aside fourth seed Sung Ji Hyun of Korea 21-10, 21-16.

In women’s doubles, Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy fought well before suffering a 21-18, 18-21, 13-21 loss to seventh seeded Japanese pair of Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto.

The men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a 16-21, 18-21 loss to eighth seeded Chinese Taipei pair of Chen Hung Ling and Wang Chi-Lin.
