For the ace shuttler P.V. Sindhu it was another moment to cherish when film star Akkineni Nagarjuna presented a brand new BMW car to her at the Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad, in the presence of chief national coach P. Gopi Chand.

The presentation was facilitated by V. Chamundeswaranath, vice-president of Telangana Badminton Association, who has been presenting young talented athletes cars by pooling money with like-minded friends and corporate bosses and thanks to the efforts of cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar. Infact, this is this is the 22nd car he has presented.

“It is terrific on part of Chamundi to honour these outstanding achievers and more so when he also makes it a point to present the young achievers too,” Nagarjuna said.

“And, I must congratulate Gopi for all his selfless efforts in producing such champions and even the parents P.V. Ramana and P. Vijaya (who were also present) for giving such a wonderful champion like Sindhu to the nation,” he said.

“I have always been a big fan of Sindhu and take pride in telling people that I also know her,” he added.

In a lighter vein, Nagarjuna  also remarked that he would see whether Chamundi will present a car to him if he were to get any award in film acting.

For his part, Gopichand said it was a great moment for him to be at the courtside when Sindhu had become a world champion. “That is the defining moment for Indian sport itself and it makes me feel even more proud that a badminton player has become one,” he said.

“I think this is just one more step before realising Sindhu’s ultimate dream of winning the Olympic gold next year” Gopi said.

Chamundi said it was only a token gesture to a truly remarkable achievement and no amount of money or gifts can match Sindhu’s achievements. “It is a priceless feat to be a world champion and sincerely wish she would come back to this venue again winning gold and again felicitated by Nagarjuna,” he said.

Responding to the felicitation, Sindhu recalled that when she was first presented a car by ‘Chamundi uncle’, many questioned the purpose. “Then, he told them to wait for a couple of years and see what I will achieve. Within four years of the first car presentation, I won the silver in Rio Olympics,” she said.

“It is always a special feeling to be presented the cat by the evergreen film star Nagarjuna sir and also in the presence of Gopi Anna who mean a lot to me. I promise that I will put in the best efforts to comeback with the Olympic gold,” she concluded.
