Carolina Marin successfully defends her European title

Double World Champions Carolina Marin successfully defended her European title on Sunday by defeating Scottish Kirsty Gilmour 21-12 and 21-18 in the final in the French town of La Roche sur Yon.

Double World Champions Carolina Marin successfully defended her European title on Sunday by defeating Scottish Kirsty Gilmour 21-12 and 21-18 in the final in the French town of La Roche sur Yon.

The World No. 2 had a comfortable first set. However, the second set was much more competitive. Marin went ahead 5-1, but the Scot lost control after leading 11-9 in the second set. Marin regained control, winning the next six points. It ultimately took 43 minutes in total for Marin to beat Gilmour.

In the men's singles final, second seeded Viktor Axelsen defeated fellow countryman and World No. 5 21-11, 21-16. It took 38 minutes for Axelsen to finish the game. This is Axelsen's first European title.

Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen defeated Niclas Nor and Sara Thygesen in what was an all-Danish final. It took the second seeded mixed doubles pair one hour and 18 minutes to beat the eighth seeded pair.
