Unseeded Indian men’s doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and M.R Arjun advanced to the third round of the BWF World Championships 2022 on Wednesday.
The Indian duo, ranked 35 on BWF rankings, beat eighth seed Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen 21-17, 21-16 in their first ever meeting. The match lasted for 40 minutes.
Dhruv and Arjun made a slow start to the first game and won it in the second game point.
In the second game, they rode on the confidence of a first-game win against the higher-ranked pair and sealed the match on the first match point itself. The Indians will face world no. 41 Hee Yong Kai Terry-Loh Kean Hean of Singapore in the third round (Round of 16).
This was India’s first win of the day after two losses in women’s doubles.
Earlier, Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy made second round exit. They suffered 21-15, 21-10 straight games loss to China’s Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan - the regaining World Championships gold medallist.
In another second round women’s doubles match, Pooja Dandu and Sanjana Santosh bowed down to gutsy So Hee and Shin Seung Chan. The Koreans advanced to the third round with a 21-15, 21-7 win.
