Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has been seeded fifth while her compatriot PV Sindhu will start as ninth seed at the upcoming Olympic Games to be held at Rio de Janeiro from August 5 to 21.

While Saina has been placed in Group G in the women’s singles category, Sindhu has been placed in Group M, according to a tweet from Badminton Association of India (BAI) today.

P. V. Sindhu’s preparedness for the Rio Olympics will be tested in the league phase itself when she plays Hong Kong-born Canadian Li Michelle in the three-player group.

The draw for the competition, beginning on August 11, were made in Rio on Tuesday.

It may be recalled that Michelle beat Sindhu, both in the team championship and the individual events, in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Saina Nehwal has been handed a much easier passage, much like K. Srikanth in the men’s section.

However, in doubles, Indians had tough luck. G. Jwala and Ashwini are in the same group as the top seeded Japanese apart from pairs from the Netherlands and Thailand.

In men’s doubles, Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy are in the company of second seeded Indonesians apart from formidable combinations from China and Japan.

Groups involving Indians:

Men singles: Group ‘H’: K. Srikanth, Henri Hurskeinen (Sweden) and Lino Munos (Mexico).

Women singles: Group ‘G’: Saina Nehwal, Maria Ulitina (Ukraine) and Vincente Lohaynny (Brazil); Group ‘M’: P. V. Sindhu, Li Michelle (Canada) and Laura Sarousi (Hungary).

Men doubles: Group ‘D’: Hendra Setiawan-Mohammad Ahsan (Indonesia) , Chai Biao-Hong Wei (China) and Hiroyuji Endo- Kenichi Hayakava (Japan) and Manu Attri-Sumeeth Reddy.

Women doubles: Group 'A': Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi (Japan), G. Jwala-Ashwini Ponnappa, Selena Piek-Eefje Muskens (the Netherlands) and Puttira Supajirakul-S. Taerattanchai (Thailand).
