India's ace shuttler Saina Nehwal on Saturday underwent a knee surgery at a city hospital here after suffering the injury early this month, which got aggravated during the Rio Olympics.

"Saina Nehwal has sustained an intra-articular injury (inside the joint) to her right knee. A small fragment of bone has separated from her patella (knee cap bone)," said Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, Head Centre for Sports Medicine, Director Arthroscopy and Shoulder Service at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

"This displaced fragment is causing her impingement and pain. Saina has undergone arthroscopic surgery this morning and is back in her room," he added.

Saina had lost in the group stage after suffering a straight game defeat against Ukraine's Marija Ulitina in the second match. She later revealed that she had an inflammation on her right knee. Saina had to be administered a dexamethasone injection after the opening round match to curb the pain, but it didn't have desired results.
