Warriors sans Nehwal breeze past Smashers

There was huge disappointment to the fans when ace shuttler Saina Nehwal of Awadhe Warriors preferred to ‘rest’ as the much-awaited clash with P.V. Sindhu of Chennai Smashers failed to materialise in the Premier Badminton League at Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Monday night.

But, once again, Warriors did not have sweat much in clinching a 4-1 win over Chennai Smashers to top the league table with 17 points.

The other three teams in the top four at the end of the Hyderabad leg are Delhi Acers (15), Chennai Smashers (13) and Mumbai Rockets (13 points).

“It’s never easy to come back after losing the first game. I committed a lot of mistakes in the first game and Sony took full advantage of it. I knew if I get rhythm I will play better and that’s what happened in the rest of the match,” B. Sai Praneeth said after getting the better of Sony Dwi Kuncoro.

Silver lining

Two-time world championship bronze medallist P.V. Sindhu expectedly demolished the inexperienced Vrushali, who stepped in for Saina, and Brice Leverdez defeated S. Tanongsak in the opening match.

In the last mixed doubles tie which was the trump match for both the teams, Warriors duo of Bodin Issara and Christinna coasted to victory.

Sindhu 7-15, 3-15; Bodin Issara & Christinna bt Chris Adcock & Pia Zebadiah 15-7, 15-10).
