Punjab boys beats Kerala to win National Junior C’ship

Mandeep Singh and Gurwinder Singh scored 60 points between them to power Punjab to a 100-82 victory over Kerala in the boys final of the 68th National junior basketball championship at the Shiv Nadar University Complex here on Sunday.

Kerala fought well in the first half as it restricted Punjab to a 42-35 lead, but Punjab stepped up in the last two quarters, scoring 29 points each, to assert its supremacy.

In the girls section, Tamil Nadu quelled the challenge from the Uttar Pradesh 69-63, even as Vaishnavi Yadav fought hard for the host with 41 points. Pushpa stood out for Tamil Nadu with 25 points, as the team recovered from 26-34 at the interval to outclass the opponent in the third quarter 20-9. It was an even battle in the last quarter, but Tamil Nadu had the cushion of lead to eventually clinch the trophy.

Both the champion teams collected Rs.1,00,000 each, while the runners-up were presented Rs.75,000.

Defending champions Tamil Nadu and Karnataka - in the boys and girls sections - ended fourth to Rajasthan and Kerala, which pocketed the prize of Rs.50,000.

Boys (final): Punjab 100 (Mandeep Singh 33, Gurwinder Singh 27, Principal Singh 12) bt Kerala 82 (Muhammed Shiraj 22, Joshua George 20, Amal Reghu 16, Sejin Mathew 14).

Third place: Rajasthan 75 (Rajeev Kumar 36, Ashish Trivedi 15, Sumit Kumar 12) bt Tamil Nadu 68 (Sheldin Rashan 18, Arvind Kumar 16, M. Shanmugam 13).

Girls (final): Tami Nadu 69 (S. Pushpa 25, M Nishanthi 15, T. Darshini 10) bt Uttar Pradesh 63 (Vaishnavi Yadav 41).

Third place: Kerala 68 (R. Sree Kala 42) bt Karnataka 52 (Sanjana Ramesh 12, VB Aishwarya 11).
