Developing explosive power is the theme of the Indian women’s boxing squad presently training in Assisi, a hill town in central Italy.

The three-month training schedule is Boxing Federation of India’s (BFI) sustained effort at giving the pugilists the best platform to prepare for the Asian Games. A few tournaments are also included in the schedule.

Getting stronger

The chief coach, Raffaele Bergamasco, is concentrating on boosting the explosive strength of the boxers. “We are insisting on the aspect of strength and I hope our girls will become stronger at the end of this work. We also did some measurement tests. Apart from teaching them techniques, making them strong in the ring is the main factor. To generate force, you need strong muscles. Explosive punches are a combination of speed and strength,” Bergamasco said.

‘Excellent progress’

Bergamasco is optimistic with the batch of women boxers. “It’s been excellent progress so far. They have great potential to grow further. They are adapting to the new methodology and the results shall be good. They need to work more on picking new strategic defence and counter defence.”

Measurement training is the key. “Our training is mainly focused on coordination and correction of minor technical faults. The new strength training is already showing good results in daily training and sparring sessions that we are witnessing here. These consolidated gains collectively shall help us deliver good results in the upcoming international competitions.”
