Olympian Simranjit Kaur gave a clinical performance to beat defending champion Pwilao Basumatary by a split decision in a 60kg quarterfinal bout in the National women's boxing championships at the St. Joseph International School here on Monday.

A World championship bronze medallist, Simranjit used her long reach and accurate combinations against her hard-hitting opponent to record a 4-1 victory and assure herself of a berth in the semifinals.

In another fascinating contest, Shiksha of Railways staved off a strong challenge from World youth champion Babyrojisana Chanu to post a 5-0 win in a 54kg bout.

Shiksha, who got a warning in the third round, boxed from a distance and relied on her counter-attacks against Babyrojisana’s explosive attacks.
