Sarita wins in China; Mary Kom loses in Olympic Test event

Laishram Sarita Devi returned to competitive boxing after her one-year ban. Shiva Thapa beat Thailand’s Yuttapong Thong Dee, while Devendro Singh Laishram notched up a Technical Knockout against China’s Yang Yufeng in the third round of his bout. However, MC Mary Kom lost on points to United States’ Virginia Fuchs at the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) Olympic Test event in Rio de Janeiro.

Asian Games bronze-medallist Laishram Sarita Devi (60kg) returned to competitive boxing after her one-year ban with a resounding victory in the opening contest of the training-cum-competition assignment in the Chinese city of Qian’an.

Sarita, who served a one-year ban for her emotional outburst at the Asian Games after a controversial semi-final loss, defeated Mongolia’s Sowoderden 3-0.

In fact, the Indian boxers put up a strong show on the opening day of competitions against teams from hosts China, Mongolia, Thailand and Korea.

World Championships bronze-medallist Shiva Thapa (56kg) beat Thailand’s Yuttapong Thong Dee 3-0, while Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Devendro Singh Laishram (49kg) notched up a Technical Knockout against China’s Yang Yufeng in the third round of his bout.

Another Commonwealth Games silver-medallist Mandeep Jangra (69kg) thrashed Thailand’s Nick Fisher 3-0. Asian Championships silver-winner Vikas Krishan (75kg), on the other hand, got the better of another Thai Kh Mr Aphisit 3-0.

Also winning their opening bouts were Kuldeep Singh (81kg), Amritpreet Singh (91kg), Narender (+91kg).

However, Gaurav Bidhuri (52kg), Manish Kaushik (60kg) lost their respective bouts along with Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Pinki Jangra (51kg).

Mary Kom loses in semis of Olympic Test event

Five-time world champion MC Mary Kom settled for a bronze medal at the International Boxing Association’s (AIBA) Olympic Test event in Rio de Janeiro after going down in the semi-finals.

The London Olympic bronze-medallist lost on points to United States’ Virginia Fuchs in the Brazilian city, which will host the Olympic Games next year.

This was Mary Kom’s first competitive appearance in over a year. She had been laid low by a shoulder injury after winning the gold medal at the Asian Games in Incheon last year.

Four other Indians, in the men’s draw, also bowed out of the ongoing competition after losing in the semi-finals, bringing an end to India’s campaign.

Former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Manoj Kumar (64kg) lost to Britain’s Samuel Maxwell, while World Championships quarter-finalist Satish Kumar (+91kg) was also defeated by a Brit in Frazer Clarke.

In other fights, Parveen Kumar (91kg) was beaten by local favourite Gidelson De Oliveira. Shyam Kakara (51kg), on the other hand, went down to Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan.
