Adhiban jumps 43 places, catapults to World No. 58

Following a sterling performance in the elite Tata Steel Masters chess last month, B. Adhiban catapulted 43 places to reach 58th in the World chess rankings released on Wednesday.

Adhiban, who proved equal to World champion Magnus Carlsen and last challenger to the world crown, Sergey Karjakin, in the Netherlands, collected a whopping 28.5 points to aggregate 2682. In October last year, Adhiban’s career-best rating is 2689 earned him the 51st spot in the world.

The Indians in the top-100 list are, five-time World champion Viswanathan Anand who retained his sixth spot with a rating of 2786, P. Hari Krishna (14th, 2758), Adhiban (58th, 2682), K. Sasikiran (70th, 2674), Vidit Gujrathi (71st, 2673), Parimarjan Negi (77th, 2670) and Surya Shekhar Ganguly (98th, 2657).

While Anand was not involved in any game in the classical format since the last ranking list was released on January 1, Hari lost eight points at Tata Steel Masters and slipped two places to 14th spot. Sasikiran gained 22 places after gaining 13 points last month.
