Harikrishna moves to career-best World No. 14; Anand slips to No. 8

The new year began on a happy note for Pendyala Harikrishna, who has moved to a career-best World No. 14 in the latest ranking list released by world chess governing body FIDE on Friday. He moved five places up from the last list.

The new year began on a happy note for Pendyala Harikrishna, who has moved to a career-best World No. 14 in the latest ranking list released by world chess governing body FIDE on Friday. He moved five places up from the last list.

He is only the second Indian to break into the world’s top twenty; the first one, Viswanathan Anand, dropped five slots down to No. 8, though. World champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway continues to be the No. 1, while Russia’s veteran Vladimir Kramnik is ranked second.

India’s Koneru Humpy maintained her No. 2 position among women, behind Hou Yifan of China. Dronavalli Harika is ranked 12th.
