Defending champion and top seeded Grandmaster Sahaj Grover came up with a strong finish – winning the last four rounds – to keep the Capablanca chess festival title at the Crawford College in Pretoria.

Sahaj defeated South Africa’s Calvin John Klassen, seeded four, in the ninth and final round to tally seven points. Second seeded International Master Daniel Cawdery was runner-up with 6.5 points.

After opening his title-defence with an expected win over Namibia’s Dante Beukes, Sahaj suffered a setback when he lost the second round to local Vincent Hercules Benjamin.

The third-round victory over Zimbabwean IM Rodwell Makoto brought Sahaj's campaign on track. The World junior bronze-medallist drew with Cawdery in the fifth round and won the rest.

This was Sahaj's second title of the month, to go with the Boardwalk Pearson title in Port Elizabeth.
