A fourth successive draw kept Viswanathan Anand in the joint lead after five rounds of the Sinquefield Cup chess tournament here on Wednesday.

Facing Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Anand forced a draw with black pieces following perpetual checks in just 25 moves. Anand raised his tally to three points, same as overnight joint leader Fabinao Caruana and Ding Liren. The third seeded Chinese nailed Anish Giri in 47 moves to join the leaders' group.

For the first time, two games produced decisive results. Like Ding Liren, Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi also won with white pieces, at the expense of Hikaru Nakamura. This victory helped Nepomniachtchi make amends for his first round loss to Anand.

The action will resume after a day of rest. Six more rounds remain in the strongest tournament of the year.
