Viswanathan Anand made a winning start to his campaign with black pieces in the Tata Steel chess tournament by nailing local hope Jorden van Foreest in 28 moves here on Saturday.

In the day’s other decisive encounter, Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi defeated local favourite Anish Giri.

While Vidit Gujrathi was battling against Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland, Teimour Radjabov was inching closer to beating Vladimir Kramnik. Earlier, Ding Liren held World champion Magnus Carlsen.

In Group ‘B’, where R. Praggnanandhaa is the cynosure of all eyes, the youngster was fighting an interesting battle with veteran Evgeny Bareev.
