Gallant Vidit stuns Peter Svidler and David Anton but falls short of qualifying for the last-eight stage; Magnus Carlsen tops league.

Showing steady improvement with every passing day, Vidit Gujrathi stunned Peter Svidler and David Anton on the final day but fell short of a quarterfinal berth at the USD 100,000 Skilling Open online chess tournament on Tuesday.

ROUND 10 REPORT

After scoring 1.5 points and two points from five rounds on each of the first two days, Vidit scored three points from the last five rounds, in spite of losing to league topper Magnus Carlsen.

Vidit finished with 6.5 points from 15 rounds to finish tied-12th.

Top eight performers - Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Levon Aronian, Teimour Radjabov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Anish Giri - will return for the two-day quarterfinals. Other eight players, including Vidit, will have to be satisfied with USD 2,500 each.

Giri, leader on the first two days, remained winless on the final day and just about survived successive defeats to Alireza Firouzja and Aronian before being the last to qualify following a five-way tie for the sixth spot.
