India raised visions of upstaging Russia but slipped to a narrow 1.5-2.5 defeat and bowed out of medal contention after the eighth round of World team chess championship here on Sunday.
In the ladies section, India battled past Vietnam 2.5-1.5 to share the fourth spot with Georgia which surprised Ukraine. With China a point ahead in the third place and expected to whip last-placed Egypt in the final round, even a victory over Azerbaijan will not be help India make the medal-bracket.
After B. Adhiban and K. Sasikiran held higher-rated rivals, Vidit Gujrathi let Peter Svidler off the hook for a draw and Parimarjan Negi surrendered to Vladimir Fedoseev.
The Indian ladies won due to Eesha Karavade’s victory but not before D. Harika escaped defeat and Tania Sachdev failed to make the most of an extra bishop.
