India’s M. C. Mary Kom was on Sunday assured of a medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games when she made her way into the semifinals of the 48kg category in women’s boxing at the Oxenford studio here.

The five-time world champion, hungry for her first Games medal, had Scotland’s Megan Gordon scurrying for cover with an all-out attack, en route to a 5-0 win.

Meanwhile, Vikas Krishan (75kg) entered the men’s quarterfinals with a decisive points win over Australian Campbell Somerville. However, India's luck ran out in the women’s 69kg when Lovina Borgohain lost to England’s Sandy Ryan on a split decision.

In gymnastics, both Indians failed to impress. Pranati Nayak, featuring in the women’s vault final, finished last with a score of 11.983. Nayak was penalised 0.100 for landing outside the line on her first attempt. The penalty perhaps played on her mind, as she later failed to make a safe landing on her second try.

In men’s rings, Rajesh Patra was hardly in contention before finishing eighth with a score of 12.933.

The cyclists and swimmers too were outclassed by their rivals.
