CWG 2018 Day Nine: All eyes on Srikanth & Co.

India’s shuttlers will be in action, among wrestlers, paddlers, and others on Day Nine of the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast.

A number of Indian participants will aim to get closer to claiming medals on Day Nine of the XXI Commonwealth Games on Friday. India’s boxers, shuttlers, wrestlers, hockey players, paddlers, squash players and others would be in action during the day.

Among male boxers, eight Indians — Amit Panghal, Gaurav Solanki, Manis Kaushik, Naman Tanwar, Hussamuddin Mohammed, Manoj Kumar, Vikas Krishan, and Satish Kumar — will contest their respective semifinals bouts in their categories.

India’s men’s hockey team will play its semifinal against New Zealand at 3 pm.

Day Eight: As it happened

Among shuttlers, K. Srikanth, the new World No. 1, will play the men’s singles quarterfinal against Rin Rei Ryan of Singapore at 7.55 am. In the afternoon (3.30 pm), H. S. Prannoy takes on Sri Lanka’s Dinaka Karunaratna. India’s top female stars — P. V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal — will also be in action in the women’s quarterfinals. Saina takes on Rachel Honderich of Canada at 8.50 am, while Sindhu locks horns with Tam Brittney, also of Canada, at 1.30 pm. Ruthuvika Gade will be the first Indian to contest the quarterfinal; she plays Danielle Lappage (also of Canada) at 7.10 am.

Also playing the quarterfinals will be India’s squash stars. Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal will team up for the women’s doubles first (at 9.30 am), while Saurav Ghosal and Dipika play the mixed doubles quarterfinals at 1.30 pm.

Among paddlers, Sharath Kamal and Harmeet Desai play their respective men’s singles quarterfinals in the morning. Sharath, alongside others, will contest the mixed doubles quarterfinals, too.

Manika Batra will hope to keep her good run going when she plays the table tennis women’s singles semifinals against Berthe Emillene of Cameroon at 6.10 am.
