Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, congratulated the Indian shooters and weightlifters on their medal-winning performances at the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Gold Coast, Australia.
Taking to Twitter, PM Modi hailed weightlifter Pardeep Singh for putting up a glorious performance and bagging a silver medal in the men’s 105 kg category.
“Pardeep Singh is India’s pride. Continuing the glorious performance of our weightlifters, he bags a Silver in the men’s 105kg Weightlifting event. Proud of him,” he wrote.
He then went on to wish shooters Jitu Rai for winning gold, Mehuli Ghosh for picking silver, and Om Mitharval and Apurvi Chandela for bagging bronze each in their respective events.
For Jitu Rai, PM Modi tweeted, “India rejoices in the victory of Jitu Rai. He once again demonstrates his prowess, and wins a Gold in the men’s 10m Air Pistol event. Congratulations.” PM Modi congratulated Mehuli for joining the fast increasing list of medal winners from the country.
“It is amazing to see Indian athletes excel at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. With a Silver in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event, Mehuli Ghosh joins the fast increasing list of medal winners from India,” he wrote.
“Supremely talented and on the mark! Well done Om Mitharval for the Bronze in the men’s 10m Air Pistol event. Your performance makes us very happy,” PM Modi wrote about Mitharval.
Meanwhile, PM Modi further wrote that he feels ecstatic to see Apurvi emerge as one of India’s finest shooters at the prestigious quadrennial event.
He said, “India lauds Apurvi Chandela for securing the Bronze in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event. It is amazing to see Apurvi emerge as one of India’s finest shooters.” Indian weightlifters continued their medal rush at the Games when Pardeep Singh picked a silver medal after lifting a combined total of 352 Kg — 152 kg in snatch and 200 kg in clean and jerk.

Meanwhile, 17-year old Mehuli fell marginally behind Singapore’s Martina Lindsay Veloso, who bagged gold in women’s 10m Air Rifle event, while Apurvi posted a score of 423.2, setting a new qualification Games record, to settle with a bronze medal.
Earlier in the day, Indian shooter Jitu Rai shot a total of 235.1 points, a new Games record, to pick up the gold medal in the men’s 10m Air Pistol event.
Mitharwal, in his debut at the event, bagged the third spot after shooting a total of 214.3 points, thus, taking India’s medal count to 15 in the 21st edition of the Games.
India is now standing at the third spot on the points table, with 17 medals in total, including seven in shooting alone.
