The marriage proposal

A basketball player from England proposed his girlfriend on the court at the Commonwealth Games. Georgia Jones, who plays for the England women’s team, happily accepted the proposal made by Jamell Anderson. Anderson lured Jones to the centre of the court with the help of team-mates, and surprised her by getting down on one knee, producing an engagement ring and asking the question.

Reconsidering the mile

A. Vinod reports from Gold Coast: Sebastian Coe, the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) president, has revealed he has been in discussion with the Commonwealth Federation about reviving the mile, which was dropped in favour of the 1500m in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1966.

As it happened

Talking to reporters here, the former Olympic champion and world record holder said, “We have had the thought of re-introducing the mile back in to the Commonwealth Games and I have an ambition to create and celebrate our own heritage, because often we have events that are the bedrock of our history.”

The mile, as can be recalled, is embedded in athletics folklore after Englands’ Roger Bannister — who died last month — ran a sub four-minute race in May 1954, in Oxford, the first man to achieve such a feat.

The CGF CEO, David Grevemberg, backed the sentiments of Sebastian Coe. He said, “That is something we have been talking about with the IAAF recently, particularly after the passing away of Roger Bannister.”
