The Indian team, taking part in the XXI Commonwealth Games getting underway here on Wednesday, was officially welcomed to the Games Village on Monday evening.

Though the country is fielding a big contingent of 219 athletes (115 men and 104 women), there were only a few athletes present at the short ceremony presided over by the Games Village Mayors – Sara Carrigan and Mark Stockwell – both reputed athletes of their time.

The duo welcomed the Indian chef-de-mission Vikram Singh Sisodia and presented him with a memento before the national tricolour was raised.

In her short intervention, Sara Carrigan complimented the athletes for having work hard to meet the norm and making it the Games and hoped that they will be rewarded. Further, she also exhorted the athletes to take part in the 12-day event holding high the spirit of fair play that would give everyone a level playing field.
