India’s Sharath Kamal had to dig deep to win his second-round match against Javen Choong of Malaysia in the table tennis men’s singles at the Oxenford studio here on Wednesday.
Sharath was up by three games before the Malaysian mounted a tremendous fightback. The Indian kept going, however, and emerged the winner with a scoreline of 11-2, 11-5, 11-4, 7-11, 11-13, 6-11, 11-7. It took him more than an hour to achieve the result.

The other Indian players figuring in the event had it easier. Harmeet Desai defeated Geoffrey Loi (PNG) 11-4, 11-3, 11-1, 11-2, and Sathiyan Gnansekaran blitzed his way past Rameez Muhammed (Pakistan) 11-5, 11-3, 11-5, 11-3.
In women’s singles, Mouma Das and Madhurika Patkar took their spots in the pre-quarterfinals with wins over Elodie Wan Kau (MRI) 11-6, 11-1, 11-8, 11-7 and Rheann Chung (TTO) 11-7, 12-14, 11-9, 11-2, 11-9.
