Anurag Thakur is set to taker over as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during its Special General Meeting (SGM) on Sunday. Thakur’s was the only nomination filed for the post on Saturday, the deadline for submitting the applications.
All the six members from the east zone, whose turn is to nominate the presidential candidate, have endorsed Thakur's candidature. Since the presidential candidate is required to be proposed and seconded by at least one member each from the designated zone, Thakur’s nomination papers were supported with three sets of proposer and seconder.
Thakur’s elevation from the secretary’s to the president’s post was virtually sealed earlier in the week. The BCCI chief’s position had to be filled following Shashan Manohar’s resignation on May 10, a day before he was appointed as the International Cricket Council’s independent chairman.
Sunday’s SGM, thus, is set to be only a formality with Thakur to be unanimously elected as the president of the BCCI for the ongoing three-year term, which will culminate in September 2017.
Shirke set to be secretary
Once he takes over as the president, Thakur is all but certain to nominate Maharashtra Cricket Association president Ajay Shirke as the BCCI secretary.
While no BCCI official was willing to speak on record, Sportstar understands the members have been informed about Thakur having zeroed in on Shirke as his key lieutenant. A BCCI member revealed on the condition of anonymity that Shirke’s appointment “is just a matter of time before the fat lady sings”.
Shirke is thus set to return as a BCCI office-bearer after three years. The former treasurer had resigned from his post in May 2013, protesting the manner in which N. Srinivasan’s regime had handled the IPL corruption scandal in the aftermath of the arrest of Gurunath Meiyappan, a Chennai Super Kings official who is Srinivasan’s son-in-law.
Thakur to resign as secretary on Sunday
Despite filing his nomination papers, Thakur did not resign from the post of secretary on Saturday. Since he is the secretary at the moment and has called the SGM, he will convene the meeting. The floor will then choose one of the five vice-presidents to chair the meeting. Once the selected vice-president takes charge of the meeting, Thakur will resign as the secretary before being anointed as the president.
The SGM will be followed by a working committee meeting, which will ratify some of the pending decisions over the last six months.
