South Africa's batsmen made the conditions look far better, but an inspired Mitchell Starc (3-49) spell gave Australia hope.

Hashim Amla (47) looked comfortable before being removed by Josh Hazlewood (2-36), but South Africa reached 171-5 at stumps – already a lead of 86.

Temba Bavuma (38) and Quinton De Kock (28) were unbeaten at the end of day one.

Callum Ferguson and Joe Mennie were handed their Test debuts for Australia, with Joe Burns also coming in and Peter Siddle (back), Shaun Marsh (finger) and Mitchell Marsh making way.

South Africa replaced the injured Dale Steyn (shoulder) with Abbott, with spinner Keshav Maharaj keeping his spot.

Faf Du Plessis opted to send Australia in and his bowlers rewarded him immediately.

David Warner (1) played a rash shot and Burns (1) was trapped in front before Khawaja (4) and Adam Voges (0) fell to Philander to leave Australia reeling at 8-4.

Debutant Ferguson survived the hat-trick ball before Smith and Philander collided mid-pitch, the latter requiring treatment and Du Plessis' review for lbw failing.

Ferguson (3) was run out by substitute fielder Dane Vilas and when Peter Nevill (3) went lbw following a review, the hosts were 31-6.

A stunning catch by JP Duminy to remove Starc (4) was the highlight as the lower-order provided little resistance.

Stephen Cook and Dean Elgar showed no signs of being so troubled as they put on 43 for the first wicket.

But Starc was inspired after tea, the first ball following the break a yorker that trapped Elgar (17) lbw.

Cook (23) followed and so did Duminy (1), who edged behind to Smith at second slip.

Hazlewood got rid of Du Plessis (7) despite the batsman's review, before Amla was gone as he approached a half-century.

De Kock and Bavuma comfortably saw the tourists to stumps, leaving them in control and on track for a 2-0 series lead.
