India’s batting coach Sanjay Bangar said that England used the batting conditions very well and Joe Root and Moeen Ali applied themselves to the task to score runs. "It’s a day one wicket and Rajkot is known to be a batsman’s paradise. Give credit to them, they are quality players and they made full use of the conditions that was on offer," Bangar said.

He further added: "You should always make the first session of the first day count. There is something in the wicket for the seamers. A couple of (dropped) catches unfortunately did not allow us to make those early inroads and get their middle order in. They have been actually losing their openers very quickly in the recent Test matches. But by lunch, we managed to pick three wickets."

When asked about leg spinner Amit Mishra getting to bowl only 10 in the day, he said: "When you have three spinners, and Ashwin being the No.1 spinner he bowled 30 overs. On day one with the freshness of the wicket, the seamers have a role to play with the new ball.

"This means one of the spinners will get fewer overs to bowl and that was the case with Mishra. We would have been in a good position if we had taken six wickets and conceded 25 or 30 runs less."

Bangar confirmed that Mohammad Shami was not available before and immediately after tea because of cramps. "He had an ice bath and bowled later. We are monitoring closely. Hopefully he will be fresh and fit tomorrow, he said.
