India women's team head coach W.V. Raman's contract expired last October, but was asked to continue till the recently concluded home series against South Africa.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on Tuesday, invited applications for the head coach’s job of the women’s team. This comes after former India cricketer W. V. Raman’s contract expired last October, but was asked to continue till the recently concluded home series against South Africa.

While it will be a two-year term, the candidate should have represented India or any other country at the International level or must be a NCA Level ‘C’ certified coach. According to the notice, the candidate should have a similar certification from a reputed organisation/institute and must have featured in a minimum of 50 first class games.

Or, the candidate should have the experience of coaching an international team for a period of minimum one season or a T20 franchise for minimum two seasons and must have a thorough understanding of the game or playing/coaching experience at the highest level. The candidate must have experience of leading a multi-cultural team.

The deadline is April 26.

All women's teams under one fold?

The advertisement categorically states that the head coach will have to work with the women’s national team, Women’s India A and Women’s India U-19 teams. A few years back, the Board started the ‘A’ programme and ahead of the World Cup and the U-19 Women’s World Cup, the Board plans to prepare a pool of talents. A headway in this regard is expected when the BCCI Apex Council meets on Friday to discuss about the tours and fixtures of the women’s team.

India will travel to England in June for an one-off Test and three T20Is and ODIs. “The Board aims to develop women’s cricket and as a measure, the hiring process will be done in due course,” a Board insider said. It is likely that Raman could re-apply for the job.

According to the Board’s constitution, the selection of the national head coach -- for men’s and women’s teams -- needs to be done by the Cricket Advisory Committee. But the three-member team headed by Madan Lal finished its term earlier this year and it needs to be seen whether the Board forms a new panel or gives an extension to the Madan Lal committee. Despite attempts, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly was not available for a comment at the time of publishing this story.

Women’s T20 Challenge

The Women’s T20 Challenge is expected to be held in the later part of May with three teams. While the Indian Board is in conversation with its overseas counterparts, it looks unlikely that an additional team will be fielded this season. A decision is expected in the coming weeks, with Delhi emerging as the possible venue for the tournament.

Applications invited for junior selection committee

The Board has also invited applications for a post in the junior selection committee, which was lying vacant after Debasish Mohanty was promoted as a senior national selector in December last year.

While there is a buzz that former Bengal pacer Ranadeb Bose could be a front runner for the position, some other names from the East Zone could also emerge. The chairman of the committee will be decided based on the experience of the members in the panel.
