With a large group of members opposing the move, Choudhary on Tuesday informed that the meeting has been postponed and a fresh date may be announced soon.

It was supposed to be a Special General Body Meeting of the BCCI to decide on the way forward in implementing the Supreme Court-ordered reforms.

There was also speculation that the next coach of the Indian cricket team would be named.

Neither happened on Tuesday despite a majority of the BCCI members being present as Indian cricket continued to be in a state of uncertainty.

The SGM, convened by acting BCCI president CK Khanna, was rendered invalid after four state associations, led by Tamil Nadu, objected to the process. It was a technicality that could have been overlooked but wasn’t.

“The earliest an SGM can be convened is by the order of the president, with 10 days' notice. But considering the fact that this is a matter which relates to the SC judgement delivered last year on July 18, and that the next date of hearing is July 14, in these circumstances the acting president of BCCI thought it fit to dispense with the notice period and expected that the members would condone it.

“This is not the 1st time. The last time it happened was on December 25, 2002, and there have been more in the past. However, since the condoning was not unanimous, we will have a properly convened meeting now. But 19 full members and seven others were present today,” acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary explained.

The SGM would have voted on the recommendations of the Special Committee constituted to study the SC reform orders.

Interestingly, Khanna himself was absent from the meeting, having sent out mails postponing it because of the aforesaid objections.

Choudhary, meanwhile, was evasive when asked if the SGM could have been official had the Board’s acting president been present to convene it. “The technicality is that if a meeting is convened, then the quorum for any GBM is 10 full members and we had 19 present. As to why the president was not present, I have no idea,” he quipped.

The next SGM can now be held only after July 25.
