Alastair Cook made history on Monday by becoming the first Englishman to reach the milestone of 10,000 Test runs.

England's captain headed into the second Test against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street just 20 runs shy of the landmark, but was dismissed for 15 in his side's first innings.

However, Cook reached his landmark on day four of the match as the hosts pursued a modest target of 79 for victory, a clip for four through the leg side taking him to five not out and prompting warm applause.

Cook is the 12th player to reach 10,000 Test runs and the youngest to do so at the age of 31 years and 157 days, breaking the previous record set by India legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Having made his debut against India in Nagpur in 2006, Cook stands head and shoulders above the rest of England's all-time Test run scorers, with Graham Gooch in second with 8,900.

Cook achieved the feat in his 229th Test innings, making him the ninth-fastest player to reach the tally, with his highest Test score of 294 coming against India in August 2011.
