R. Kavin and Abhishek Tanwar of Thiruvallur Veerans celebrates after scoring the winning runs against Madurai Super Giant.

Skipper Baba Aparajith (72, 35b, 6x4, 5x6) and Hari Nishaanth (37, 23b, 1x4, 2x6) stitched a brilliant 55-ball 104-run stand for the third-wicket as VB Thiruvallur Veerans coasted to a three-wicket win over Madurai Super Giant in the TNPL at the Sankar Nagar grounds here on Tuesday.

Earlier, a racy 112-run stand off 59 balls for the second wicket between skipper K.B. Arun Karthick (68 n.o., 38b, 8x4, 2x6) and Mani Bharathi (67, 36b, 6x4, 5x6) saw Madurai Super Giant score an impressive 145 for three.

Super Giant seemed to have woken up from slumber for once.

It had lost 11 games on the trot in two seasons of the TNPL so far but this time around it was determined to disturb the calculations of Veerans.

And its intentions were pretty clear with the way both Karthick and Bharathi handled the bowlers right through.

A steady rain delayed start of play for little over an hour.

Veerans kept looking up at the skies hoping for play to begin. But with the groundsmen doing a brilliant job, the teams got to play 18 overs each.

Super Giant won the toss and elected to bat. Openers Karthick and Shijith Chandran played the first two overs rather quietly but when they decided to go full throttle, medium-pacer Silambarasan banged one in short and Shijith had no option but to gift a dolly to B. Aparajith at mid-on.

After four overs of play, the rain came in hard and forced stoppage of play for the second time. With 38 minutes of play lost, the match was again reduced to 14 overs a side.

But with a job in hand, Karthick and Bharathi played like men in a hurry. They showed no mercy and belted the bowlers to all parts of the ground. And, Veerans looked like on-field spectators.

Luck also played a part for Bharathi. He miscued a slog and off-spinner Malolan Rangarajan offered butter fingers on this occasion.

It cost Veerans dear as he went on a run-riot from there along with his skipper.

The scores:

Madurai Super Giant in 145 for three in 14 overs (K.B. Arun Karthick 68 n.o, Mani Bharathi 67) lost to VB Thiruvallur Veerans 147 for seven in 13.3 overs (Baba Aparajith 72, Hari Nishaanth 37, Karthikeyan three for 26).
