Ace Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is currently playing for Worcestershire in the England County Championship, is an automatic choice in Tamil Nadu's playing XI, according to the State's Chairman of Selectors, S. Sharath.
The all-rounder is not a part of India's ongoing ODI series against Australia and if he doesn't get picked for the three-match T20 series against the Aussies beginning on October 7, Ashwin would be playing in the Ranji Trophy opener. Tamil Nadu commences its Ranji Trophy campaign against Andhra Pradesh at home on October 6.
Sharath said Ashwin is an invaluable asset to any team. “Picking Ashwin is not a tough call at all. He can just walk into the team, if he is not on national duty. He adds immense value to our side, and combined with his outstanding and unparalleled dedication to the game, Ashwin is an automatic choice in selection,” he added.
Prasanna: Ashwin is still the best spinner we have
Sharath, however, said he hasn't established any contact with the all-rounder. “He hasn't spoken to me or my team. He is busy with his county engagements. Knowing him, I am sure he will get in touch with us as soon as he is available for selection,” he noted.
Ashwin was included in Tamil Nadu's Ranji quarterfinal fixture last year but he couldn't play. He, however, lead the State side in the Vijay Hazare Trophy a couple seasons ago. The 31-year-old is expected to reach the city in a couple of days time after the conclusion of Worcestershire's county match against Durham.
