As the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) got underway last week, it picked up the pace quickly, with the cricket fans of the state ensuring a good turnout.

It has, however, missed the star factor so far, with most of the big names out of the tournament due to national team commitments. That’s not all. The spectators have been left a bit disappointed with star coaches like Lance Klusener remaining out of the action.

The South African, who has been retained as the chief coach of Lyca Kovai Kings, was not a part of the side in the first game, where it defeated Karaikudi Kaalai.

Klusener, who is also the batting coach of Zimbabwe, will not be in the dugout when the team takes on Chepauk Super Gillies at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium here on Saturday.

The team sources, however, confirmed to Sportstar that Klusener will be joining the side in the first week of August. “He (Klusener) will be joining the side early next week. We are expecting him by August 1,” a source said.

With Zimbabwe’s tour to Sri Lanka getting over on July 18, it is learnt that the South African decided to head back home to spend time with his family, before taking up the TNPL assignment.

Under Klusener, the Kovai Kings reached the last-four stage of the tournament last year. His good track-record had earned him an extension. With the side getting off to a good start this time too, Klusener’s return, early next month, is likely to boost the team’s confidence.
