Deodhar Trophy: Tamil Nadu captain showers praise on Dinesh Karthik

A beaming Tamil Nadu captain Vijay Shankar said that his team wanted to do something special as a tribute to the consistency of the star batsman and wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik.

Referring to the 'guard of honour' given to the senior-most cricketer in the team which won the Prof. D.B. Deodhar Trophy beating India Red in the final at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Stadium here on Wednesday, Vijay felt that the experienced Karthik deserved every bit of it.

"It has been a truly outstanding performance from him right through the season which also saw us win the Vijay Hazare Trophy recently. All the youngsters can learn a lot from the way he approached to his task," the Tamil Nadu captain remarked. "He has been such a terrific influence on all of us and we salute his brilliant batting right through," he added.

Vijay said his team was confident of winning the final after posting 303. "It is never easy to chase such big targets. We always knew that a couple of crucial breakthroughs would put the brakes at any given point of time. And, I am also glad the way the spinners responded, as they have been doing consistently, today also, even on these pitches" he commented. "It has been a complete team effort which saw have a great season," he said.

"Even if we had not won we would have been happier for we knew that we had given our best on the last day of the season," Vijay remarked.

For his part, Karthik, who cracked a brilliant 126 in the final and spoke briefly at the presentation ceremony, also complimented the team effort for winning another major trophy. "We played well right through the season and I wish the best for all those playing in the IPL next week," he signed off.
