Ranji: Round 8, Day 4: Delhi’s fate still hangs in balance after a draw

Delhi’s finds of season Nitish Rana and Dhruv Shorey hit patient centuries as the visitors managed a point against defending champions Karnataka thereby having a slender outside chance of qualifying for the knock-out rounds of the Ranji Trophy.

Delhi thus ended their group league engagements with 25 points from eight games. While the league table will show them at the top of group A, Bengal, Assam (both on 25 points) and Karnataka (with 24) have a match to go.

UP lower-order ensures a draw against Punjab

Uttar Pradesh lower-order batted with purpose to force a draw against a dominant Punjab, but could not deny the visitors’ three points on the basis of first innings lead in the Group B match.

Chasing 342 for a win at Green Park, UP lost their top four batsmen early, but Akshdeep Nath (76 not out), Eklavya Dwivedi (27) and Piyush Chawla (58) made sure the hosts do not fizzle out against Punjab as they ended on 204 for six.

After losing Almas Shaukat (6), Himanshu Asnora (0) and skipper Suresh Raina (4) UP were 10 for three and then slumped to 96 for five before they saw a fightback.

Mithun, Ian Dev score tons as J&K drew with Goa

Hundreds by skipper Mithun Manhas and Ian Dev Singh helped Jammu and Kashmir post an impressive 501 in reply to Goa’s mammoth 552 before their Group C cricket match ended in a tame draw.

Resuming from their overnight score of 325 for 5, J&K rode on Singh’s 115 and Manhas’ 135 to almost match up to the visiting side.

Lower down the order, Aamir Aziz (47) and Samad Bhat (42 not out) also made useful contributions.
