Debutant Mohammad Mudassar of Hyderabad came up with an impressive spell of fast bowling to return with a five-wicket haul and force Assam to follow-on on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Group-A match at Barsapara Stadium here on Saturday.

Earlier, resuming at its overnight score of 289 for eight, Hyderabad folded up for 326 with Akash Bhandari hitting a crucial, unbeaten 71 (112b, 7 x 4, 1 x 6). For the host, Arup Das bowled well this morning again to complete a five-wicket haul.

Assam began its reply poorly and could not construct partnerships of value. The 24-year-old Mudassar bowled a splendid line and length and generated late swing. It was this swing via which he dismissed opener Riyan Parag; the delivery was a beauty and set the tone for his team’s domination.

Compounding Assam’s woes was the way the Hyderabad pace trio of Mudassar, Ravi Kiran and Sudeep Tyagi struck in tandem. The other pacer T. Ravi Teja, too, bowled a teasing off-stump line; he was unlucky not to get more wickets.

Five for 14

Once Mudassar forced Assam captain Gokul Sharma to play on to the stumps - the batsman attempted an off-side stroke - to leave Assam struggling at 122 for five. Assam never really recovered, losing the last five wickets for just 14 runs.

Hyderabad captain Ambati Rayudu was keen to see Mudassar finish off with a deserving five-wicket haul. He removed the fiery Ravi Kiran, who also claimed his 100th Ranji victim during his spell, and let the former cap wrap up the innings just before tea break. Mudassar ended with five for 36.

In its second innings, Assam again suffered early blows and finished the day at 36 for two. It stares at a probable defeat on the third day itself.
