As if Tamil Nadu’s batting against a largely insipid Mumbai bowling attack wasn’t entertaining enough, the sparse crowd — not more than 20 to be precise — witnessed a rare occurrence with the batting team being penalised for intentionally running on the pitch with an objective to damage it.
Umpires Virender Sharma and Abhijit Deshmukh kept a close watch on Dinesh Karthik’s running between the wickets after he joined B. Indrajith.
Reprimand
After having a word with Karthik informally, Sharma soon issued an official reprimand for the same offence when the batsmen ran three runs off Vijay Gohil.
After Karthik’s dismissal, Sharma penalised Tamil Nadu five runs after Vijay Shankar reverse-swept Gohil and ran on the middle of the pitch.
Mumbai fined
With Tamil Nadu batsmen in full flow, Mumbai slowed the game down, which eventually meant the team was punished for a minor over-rate offence. While captain Tare was fined 20 per cent of his match-fees, in addition to the Level 1 breach, his teammates will lose 10 per cent of their fees.
