Mayank Agarwal’s run feast should not be lost in the feat that Karnataka has achieved this season. During the course of his unbeaten 104 against Railways on Monday, the Karnataka opener crossed 1,000 runs for the season at an average of 147.

The third day’s play in the group ‘A’ Ranji Trophy match at the Karnail Singh Stadium ended with Karnataka at 208 for one — an overall lead of 309 after Railways, resuming at 241 for four, folded up for 333.

Scorecard

After a 31 against Assam and a pair against Hyderabad, Agarwal notched five centuries in seven innings to emerge the leading scorer for Karnataka. Another consistent performance came through leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal, who claimed four of the six Railways’ wickets to fall this morning.

Gopal, who went unrewarded for his efforts on Sunday, was a transformed bowler today. “The pitch was a little slow but I concentrated on bowling consistently in areas that kept batsmen thinking. I knew I would succeed if I remained patient even though the situation has its own pressure. I hope I get some spin in the morning (on Tuesday),” said Gopal.

Ranji Trophy: Bowlers bring back TN into contest

Gopal began the day by castling Arindam Ghosh, overnight 70. Ghosh (183 balls, 13 fours and two sixes) missed his century by nine runs after his fifth wicket partnership with skipper Mahesh Rawat fetched the team 201 runs. His dismissal triggered a mini collapse as Manish Rao fell without scoring.

Rawat was the seventh batsman to fall for 124 (off 182 balls) which included 12 fours and three sixes. He was Gopal’s third wicket and the leg-spinner added the scalps of Vineet Dhulap before Railways’ finished 101 runs in arrears — 92 runs coming today but the last six wickets falling for a mere 49 runs.

Agarwal then took over to produce an impressive 157-ball knock (nine fours and three sixes). He added 91 runs with D. Nischal (41) in the unfinished partnership after opener R. Samarth’s 117-run association with Agarwal ended to a leg-before dismissal. “There is so much to learn from Mayank’s work ethic. We all respect and admire his approach,” said Gopal in praise of his team-mate.
